⚠️ Not Medical Advice

SunVitD provides educational estimates only. Nothing in this app constitutes medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Always consult a qualified healthcare professional before making decisions about sun exposure or supplementation. This applies to users in all jurisdictions including the EU, UK, US, and Canada.

1. Nature of Our Estimates

SunVitD calculates estimated vitamin D production using publicly available research on UV radiation, skin phototypes, body surface area, and atmospheric conditions. These are statistical estimates — not measurements of your actual vitamin D blood levels.

Actual vitamin D synthesis varies significantly between individuals based on genetics, age, medications, health conditions, clothing, glass exposure, sunscreen, and many other factors not captured by our model. The only reliable way to know your vitamin D status is a blood test (25-hydroxyvitamin D).

2. UV Exposure Risks

Sun exposure carries real health risks including:

  • Sunburn (even on cloudy or cool days)
  • Cumulative UV damage and accelerated skin aging
  • Increased risk of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers with repeated overexposure
  • Eye damage (cataracts, photokeratitis) from UV radiation

Our burn risk estimates are general guidance only. Conditions change rapidly and individual sensitivity varies. Do not rely solely on SunVitD to determine safe exposure times.

3. Vitamin D Intake Figures

SunVitD references research suggesting population-adequate vitamin D intake may be substantially higher than official RDA figures. We cite the statistical correction by Veugelers & Ekwaru (2014), which suggests adequate intake closer to 8,895 IU/day. Official guidelines differ by jurisdiction:

  • EU / EFSA: 600 IU/day (15 µg) for adults
  • US / NIH: 600–800 IU/day depending on age
  • UK / NHS: 400 IU/day, especially in autumn/winter
  • Canada / Health Canada: 600–800 IU/day

We present the Veugelers & Ekwaru research for informational purposes only — it is not a personal recommendation. Do not change your supplementation without consulting a doctor, especially if you have hypercalcemia, kidney disease, sarcoidosis, or other conditions affected by vitamin D metabolism.

4. Regulatory Context

United States:

SunVitD is not a medical device and is not regulated by the FDA. It is a general wellness app providing non-medical information only.

European Union:

SunVitD does not constitute a medical device under EU MDR 2017/745. It is a general wellness application providing non-medical information.

United Kingdom:

SunVitD is not regulated by the MHRA as a medical device. It provides general health information only and does not replace NHS advice.

Canada:

SunVitD is not a licensed medical device under Health Canada regulations. It provides general wellness information only.

5. Skin Type Classification

Our skin type selector uses the Fitzpatrick Scale, a dermatological tool developed for clinical use. Self-classification carries inherent inaccuracy. If unsure of your skin type, consult a dermatologist.

6. Third-Party Data

UV index and air quality data are sourced from third-party providers (Open-Meteo, OpenWeatherMap, AQICN). We cannot guarantee accuracy or timeliness. Always check official local weather or health services for safety-critical decisions.

7. Who Should Take Extra Care

Consult a healthcare provider before relying on sun exposure for vitamin D if you:

  • Have a personal or family history of skin cancer or pre-cancerous lesions
  • Take photosensitising medications (certain antibiotics, diuretics, antidepressants)
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have infants or young children in your care
  • Are immunocompromised
  • Have lupus, porphyria, or other photosensitive conditions
  • Have a history of vitamin D toxicity or hypercalcemia

8. Emergency Situations

If you experience symptoms of severe sunburn, heat stroke, or suspected vitamin D toxicity (nausea, vomiting, weakness, frequent urination, kidney pain, confusion), seek immediate medical attention:

  • EU / Poland: 112
  • UK: 999
  • US: 911
  • Canada: 911

Do not use this app as a substitute for emergency medical care.
